Montgomerie Course at Celtic Manor

Very Good See all 421 reviews

With dramatic tee shots soaring majestically over lush valleys and exhilarating downhill approaches that test even the most skilled golfers, course designer Colin Montgomerie has masterfully infused his extensive Ryder Cup expertise into the creation of this remarkable golf course. Each hole presents a unique and strategic challenge, compelling players to think critically about their shots and navigate the course with precision.

Montgomerie has also drawn inspiration from his rich Scottish links golf heritage, imbuing the course with a classic ambiance that pays homage to the traditional elements of the game. This is beautifully highlighted by the presence of deep pot bunkers that guard the fairways and greens, as well as the intricately designed greenside swales that add an extra layer of complexity to approach shots. The entire layout is set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Usk Valley and the Severn Estuary, creating a stunning visual experience that enhances the overall enjoyment of the game.

Given the significant elevation changes throughout the course a buggy is highly recommended to make your round more comfortable and enjoyable. The undulating terrain can be quite challenging, and a buggy will allow you to focus on your game rather than the physical demands of walking the fairways of this Celtic Manor gem.

Montgomerie Golf Course

Celtic Manor’s connection with Colin Montgomerie began long before he led his European starlets to Ryder Cup victory in 2010; in fact, he puts his name to a championship layout that’s up there with the best UK resort golf courses. Like the Roman Road, there are a few hills to negotiate but the rewards include splendid views around the resort.

The Montgomerie Course has a championship heritage with many holes being part of The Wentwood Hills Golf Course which hosted The European Tour's Wales Open between 2000 and 2004 with the remaining holes remodelled and redesigned from the Coldra Woods Golf Course. The golf course as it stands today is an excellent test with stunning undulations and views and has hosted The EuroPro Tour in 2015 as a standalone Championship venue which was won by Gary King with a 3-round -9 total.

Signature hole - No. 3: Par 5, 609 yards, SI 5

This spectacular par 5 featured in our list of "Five holes you must play" and is arguably the best on the entire resort. Despite measuring a hefty 609 yards from the tips, the second half of the tree-lined hole plunges steeply downhill, making the green an inviting target to reach in two shots. Magnificent vistas over the Usk Valley and Ryder Cup Twenty Ten course make the hole as scenically dramatic as it is challenging.

Again a hilly course but with some very interesting holes. Greens a little slower because of the rain and we scored better because of it. Probably my favourite of the three courses at Celtic Manor!

Shame it was wet underfoot and greens recently dressed but well worth a trip

Played at the end of March and even though the course is quite high it was completely soaking under foot and shouldn't have been open. Everything plugged on the fairways and I actually walked out of my golf shoe twice as it got stuck in the fairway.

All bunkers were clay, no sand at all and there was no notice of this beforehand.

Brilliant course - worth playing juat for the 12th hole! Stunning 🤩

The course was tricky, short but due to conditions of ball plugging on literally every drive so no run actual made the course long. Very wet - and the course needed quite a lot of care to be presentable- bunkers were awful, scruffy and sad so sodden and not raked. Martials not seen on course until the half way hut, extremely slow 5 1/4 hours due to a few groups ahead. Clearly martials use sat move on buggies to judge pace of play only.

All fairways on the Montgomerie were boggy and wet. We lost balls in our group due to plugging in the fairways. This course should be closed when conditions are this bad. Greens were good. Bunkers we compacted and hard.

Excellent round only marked it down as the fairways were soft and balls were plugging, just due to the recent weather

Great course, glad we got a buggy, amazing views from the 12th some very challenging holes, I’d love to play it again.
