Berkshire is renowned for its idyllic countryside, and Wokefield Estate's tranquil surroundings are no different, resulting in a beautiful place to play golf. With no fewer than nine lakes littered around the course, there is no shortage of difficulty for visiting golfers to negotiate, but the outstanding surroundings should be enough to alleviate the pain of any disappointing golf.
The course is carved through elevated trees and mature oaks, along manicured fairways and immaculate putting surfaces. Besides the abundance of water, Gaunt has incorporated and abundance of huge bunkers throughout the course which place an emphasis on course management. Be warned, the rough is very penal if you stray from the fairways – so take plenty of golf balls!
There are several memorable holes throughout the round, particularly the par 5s, which require three good shots to have any chance of making birdie. The 9th is a classic risk/reward hole, where an ambitious drive over the water can leave a wedge to the green on this 450 yard dogleg.
Wokefield Estate is home to an excellent practice complex and driving range, where the PGA professionals offer expert technical guidance.
Signature Hole: 12th – (Par 3, 195 yards)
While the par 5s are all great challenges, it’s the par 3 12th that is worthy of a postcard. You’ll need a crisply struck medium-to-long iron to carry the glistening water that stands between you and the safety of the green. Even if you find the putting surface in regulation, the green’s severe undulations will make you work for your par. A terrific and beautiful golf hole.

When we arrived, I thought we were staying in the old Manor house, but we actually stayed in a new facility which was full of children and pets. I thought the facility would be more up market. There was a swimming pool that I thought partner could use which was full of children jumping and leaping about. The gymnasium was inadequate and not fit for purpose. We never got to use sauna. I could put this down as my fault as I did not investigate the place adequately enough. The biggest problem was the room. It was like sleeping in a sauna. I never slept. It was so hot my partner and I decided to leave the next morning. I played a few holes on the Sunday but decided I'd had enough. Got my partner a traveled home Sunday morning. One more thing when getting prepared for our evening meal we were told we could not eat till 7:30 pm is this normal procedure?

The hotel was ok. Facilities were good. The food in the evening wasn’t amazing but what can you expect for a limited size buffet. Drinks were expensive and service at the bar was slow at the best of times. Rooms were spacious, clean and beds were comfortable.

Food and drinks were way too expensive- £20 for a Lasagne that was small and microwaved. £6 for a can - a can - of Guinness - hotel was great and food quality was great - just way over priced and so we went out of hotel on last day for food.

The hotel was set in wonderful grounds which really make you forget how close to major roads you are. The grounds are vast and for anyone with mobility problems, be wary of the distances needed to walk from accommodation and breakfast and dinner which are eaten at different places. The room was OK, nothing out of the ordinary. The food again was just OK; breakfast was nice but dinner was a buffet with little choice. As a chain hotel, the prices for food and beverages was slightly expensive. Staff were helpful. Overall, considering the price paid, the quality of the room, food and golf was not up to what we expected and I would not recommend to others.

The course was in terrible condition. The usual fairway mower had broken a week before according to the pro shop. This meant whatever they had then cut the fairway with left the grass as long as the rough and all the grass cuttings had also all been left behind. This made it impossible to find your ball after you put one on the fairway. Because of this it made the pace of play incredibly slow because everyone was looking for their balls on the fairway! 5hours 45minutes is far too long for a round of golf. Despite the good weather bunkers were also GUR and no buggies either. The whole experience was disappointing.

Overall it was disgusting - tees were positioned where the ladies are so took out a lot of challenge on the holes - tees were disgusting, muddy, sandy, very poor condition. fairways not been cut for several weeks so couldn’t tell if you are in the rough, balls being lost in middle of hat you can make out as fairways as plugged, bunkers had no sand and ones that did never been raked, greens had a lot of moss on which ball jumped a lot, wasn't worth playing on - then top it off rounds were taking so long!! First round on Saturday took us 5 &1/2 hours then we played yesterday- we decided to play 9 holes only as it took 3 hours so we lost out on a round. Overall very poor experience and wouldn't recommend customers going for the golf - if I could won’t give it a rating as it was in that poor condition. Spoilt the weekend!

Very good design, some very good holes, whole course a good test and very enjoyable for all handicaps. Greens were Rolling at a good pace, just a shame some areas are showing wear and the need for attention but this by no means spoiled our 3 days of golf. Bunker inconsistency a bit of a shame some firm not much sand mainly due to rain water pooling but others way too much sand often not compacted or raked, mostly not the course fault just lazy players. overall though the course is in good shape especially after another very dry summer.

Whilst it has undoubtedly been a very tough year for courses due to the very dry summer there were numerous tee boxes which were shabby as were a couple of greens . However it was good for mid to high handicappers . The range was good easily accessible and in good condition . All the golf Staff were very helpful and all made us feel welcome.

This was by far the worst course we have played. It is clear the course is not a primary concern for the owners of the estate and this shows from the very first tee box. Appreciating the very hot weather the UK has experienced this summer, we didn’t expect top notch conditions. However, it was apparent the course condition is more than just weather worn, it has been neglected. A number of holes had more bare patches than grass and another had a large mound of mud just beyond the tee box which impaired the view and for those who aren’t big hitters, would be a massive obstacle. The greens were exceptionally slow, not true and covered in bare patches and ridges. Such was our utter disappointment that we paid out of pocket to play at another course on the day we should have played our included second round. It is a shame as the holes are interesting but the course needs serious investment to justify the course fee, let alone be included in a not inexpensive golf break.

Layout was more difficult than slope rating with many bunkers and water hazards. Fairways suffered from dry summer. Green aprons also poor in many places. Six greens approximately diseased . Disappointed as course would have played a lot better without these issues.

So, so slow. Six and a half hours on Saturday and then six on Sunday. The slowest rounds we’ve ever played. Pro shop staff on Saturday were brilliant. Sunday morning was a different matter. Someone should be a traffic warden instead of a pro shop cashier. Sorry, but true. Is this a £60 per round championship course. Well that’s what they charge and it is. But not in our book. It felt like conveyor belt golf whilst your pocket was being dipped. £40 for a buggy. Come on. The most we’d payed is £30 before this weekend, oh, and according to mr Sunday cashier, you can’t have your buggy until 40 minutes before your round. Try lugging your cart bag up to the range and back. Apart from Captain Sunday, the shop and bar staff were brilliant.
