The pride of southwestern Spain, Montecastillo Resort has long been a favourite of golfers all over the world. One of Jack Nicklaus’ most magnificent layouts, the course flows over the rolling hills of Andalucia, offering some fantastic views of the Spanish countryside. Often compared to England’s Wentworth, Montecastillo is a historic course. The host of the European Tour’s Volvo Masters from 1997-2001, this epic track has seen many golfing greats tee it up over the years.
Found just 15 miles from Spain’s gorgeous Atlantic coast, Montecastillo is in a great location, only 15 minutes from Jerez Airport and 30 minutes from Cadiz. The 5-star Barcelo Hotel at Montecastillo is magnificent, offering the highest standard of comfort and service. The elegant accommodation is decorated in Andalucian fashion, adding to the historic feel of the resort, why not go all inclusive for a hassle-free holiday.
If you happen to be a motorsports fan too then this resort isn’t far from the world-famous Jerez circuit. The resort has recently been refurbished and just oozes luxury. This is a great golf resort for people looking for something a little special, one to savour and talk about for years to come.

The highlight of the whole experience at Barceló Montecastillo Resort is the Jack Nicklaus-designed championship golf course. The par-72 is just over 7000-yards from the back tees but with many different teeing options, you’re sure to find a length of course that suits your game so that you can just enjoy your round.
This course is consistently rated in the top ten courses of mainland Europe, a title that is absolutely deserved. One of the reasons this course always ranks so highly is the meticulous attention to detail in the way the course is kept. You will find this course in nothing other than immaculate condition.
The large and inviting greens are fast and consistent with subtle borrows. Water plays a big role in this course and can give you extra-trouble on the closing three holes. You need to keep your wits about you right until the end of the round.
Every hole on this course is special but the highlight is arguably the 16th. It is a classic modern championship hole, it is stunning on the eye. A fader’s hole, this hole gently curves to the right and features fairway bunkers, pine and olive trees on the left and a perfectly-placed water hazard awaiting errant approach shots. Whilst visually pleasing, this is a challenging hole and requires well-struck shots from tee to green.
With a championship course of such pedigree, you would expect the practice facilities to match and they do. The practice area is a great place to warm-up before you head out onto the course or to work on your swing. The short game area gives you everything you need to work on the part of your game that really matters, especially on a course like this that can have such fast greens in the summer months.
The resort also has a pitch and putt facility which has recently been expanded. If you’re travelling with children or new golfers, this is a great place to pique their interest in golf or you could just spend some time here as the sun goes down.
As you would expect at such a venue, buggies are available and are mandatory before 11am. The pro-shop is well-stocked and worth a visit for some souvenirs of your trip to the famous course. This is a world-renowned resort for a reason and its reputation precedes it. It will live up to this reputation though and it will almost certainly exceed it. Don’t miss this golfing experience.
Past winners at Montecastillo include Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood and Miguel Angel Jimenez during the times it was a regular venue on The European Tour.

The Barceló Montecastillo Resort has forged an impressive reputation in the Jerez area and beyond, not just as a result of the Nicklaus golf course. The five star hotel is elegant, simple and prides itself on ensuring outstanding hospitality.
The accommodation is comprised of 124 bedrooms ( 41 superior standard rooms, 63 superior golf view rooms, 15 deluxe, 3 Junior Suites and 2 suites), and 20 villas, all of which are decorated and furnished to echo the traditional Andalucian style, and are fitted with extras like air-conditioning and satellite television.
The attentive service that all visitors are assured of will allow guests to focus on enjoying the sights of Jerez, the locally produced sherry, and most importantly Jack Nicklaus' terrific golf course.
In the on-site restaurant, El Lagar, you can enjoy the finest local produce and some Jerez sherry. If you’re into your health and well-being then speak to a nutrition expert and have them create a breakfast smoothie for you depending on the nutritional requirements of your body. Maybe you could see what superfood helps you make birdies.
When you have completed your round in the heat of the afternoon sun and are looking to unwind, the AKADAMA pool bar is the perfect place. Enjoy a cocktail in the water as you boast of your golfing conquests that day.
Speaking of unwinding, the “U-Spa” at Barceló Montecastillo is an experience of pure indulgence. Treat yourself to a massage and some time to yourself as you allow the spa staff to do what they do best and help you unwind. Having just been redecorated, this spa has never looked better and the cutting-edge fitness equipment means you can stay on top of your fitness whilst you’re away too.
This resort is pure indulgence. It will take up a special place in your memory and you will certainly want to return.

The best Golf Resort I’ve played in. The facilities so close to each other. The course amazing and a buggy needed for sure. Food was lovely. Highly recommend and we will be back. Amazing value for what we paid 💚

Great course but long beware if you don’t hit it far , couple of greens in worn condition

Disastrous! Our tee times were bumped back by 30 minutes and it after that it was the slowest round we have ever played. 6 hours in buggies! Consequently we had no time to stay after as coach driver’s time was up. Some of the course was very scruffy although the layout is good (a buggy is a must though) and greens were good.

The golf course is got to be one of the best golf courses I have ever played fantastic layout and great looking holes my only complaint would be some of the fairways had bear patches which give some unfair lays
